Hi Chris
In Photoshop you will soon find that there is normally more than one way to do each job.Resizing is no exception. The easiest way is to use the crop tool.Click on this and you will see 2 boxs appear at the top of the screen.Type in 800px in one and 600px in the other(don't forget the px.Photoshop defaults to inches so if you don't put px in you will end up with some huge pics). The arrow inbetween the two boxs lets you swap the figures around without typing them in again(handy for switching from landscape to portrait crops). It's also an handy time to straighten your shots up.If you click and hold outside the crop box you can rotate the crop selection.
WARNING-Always use "Save As" when you have cropped or you will overwrite your original pic and you will be stuck with the 800px wide one.
A bit of advice-Don't try and learn Photoshop on your own-you won't do it.Buy some books, watch videos or better still, spend a few hours with someone who knows how to use the program.Learn the basics well and then progress on to the more interesting stuff.
Cheers Gary
