I run a base scanner here Craig its a Uniden UBC785XLT, I have owned it for about a Year now and its probably been the Best scanner I have had yet! Covers most frequencies and I use it for Air,Helimed,Pub/Shop Watch,Fire Service listening e.t.c.
What amount of money are you prepared to spend on one and also what Antennas are you planning on using?

Hi Craig
For the money your going to spend my advice would be a UBC3500XLT (handheld) and ARC3500Pro software for computer control, when it comes to antennas you want something broadband with what you want to listen too so maybe a Super scan stick 2 from moonraker.. I know you mention a base unit, but beleive me the 3500XLT is more than capable of doing that, I use one myself. Also its cheaper than the UBC785XLT which is older and the 3500 as 1500 more memories and more too offer. If you want nearer the time you are going to buy give me a pm and I will let you know the best places to buy...or any other advice on other scanners, antennas just pm me.
Cheers Mike

yeah i have be looking on ebay but i am now sure wot are a good buy and wot is not i have just bought the Icom IC-F41GT for £50 can anyone give me ideas to wot to look out for Craig Think carefully about whether you really need a base unit. A second hand handheld would probably give you more flexability. Quality base units are expensive. Think about your aerial (or aerials) and positioning. Decent quality co-ax and an aerial can quickly eat up your budget but it is a case of junk in / junk out. What features do you actually need? Lot's of memories, computer control and alpha tagging are all nice but are they more important than having a good receiver with true wide-band coverage? Think about the band-plan that any potential purchase uses - most Uniden/Realistic models use an American band-plan which can be a real pain in the UK. Think about your location. Are there a lot of radio users nearby? Any paging masts? A handheld or cheap base unit fed with a wideband aerial can easily become overloaded and give you image frequencies all over the place. There is far too much talk about radios (and camera bodies!) about what is the 'best' and a lot of brand/mdel snobbery.
