Thought I'd put some photos up from today's proceedings - I actually enjoyed some of it for a change - but took more pictures of the Royal Marines beach landing than aircraft! The Cat pulled off a great display, it has to be said, passes like those at Whitehaven (although I didn't have the height I had there, so no background). Some of the display was a little disjointed in places (radio comms trouble?) plus the Falcons scrubbed their drop due to 28kt winds over the sea wall at the beach DZ (plus the tide was coming in!), the Lanc only did one flypast (Spit and Hurricane couldn't leave EDI due high crosswinds) and the inclusion of the Eastern Airways J41 was a surprise to say the least....
First of all, the 'static', such as it was:
The RN do a sterling job each year at Sunderland regarding bringing up 'real' airframes - an acquaintance of mine runs the whole RN/RM exhibition, arranging for the helos to be roaded up from Gosport (or in the case of the Lynx, Fleetlands). The Lynx is Endurance's airspare and will be substituted for one of the "Red Plum's" helos later this year. He couldn't get any Sea King GI airframes this year.... the RAF, as usual, only managed a plastic Hawk and Harrier courtesy of the ET&T.
Ground attractions:
Never usually bother with the arena stuff but I'd never seen the gun carriage race live (remember it from the Edinburgh Tattoos on the telly when I was a mere young-un!). Impressive stuff....
Beach Assault:
HMS Albion (L14) - I'm a warship enthusiast too! - got in on the act, disgorging no less than four RM LCVPs and two LCU Mk.10s - the pictures show some of the LCVPs - an LCU is shown in the last shot. Again, impressive stuff. I've seen 'proper' assaults at the likes of Luce Bay before during exercises so knew what to expect.
Flying Display:
Also present but not photographed were a Mustang, the BBMF Lancaster and the Aerostars.
