Hi folks,
I am working on a project to locate all sites that have been used by or in support of the military during the 20th Century across the UK. The intention is to produce a comprehensive website which will have links to existing websites on which a history of each site has been recorded. Hopefully it will also encourage researchers to track down histories of the sites for which no history has been recorded.
I am currently at the stage at which I am compiling a database of all known sites and would be grateful for your help.
What I am currently after is the location of all sites in Cumbria which were used by the military from 1900. These may include older sites which have continued to be used or re-used such as Carlisle Castle. There are a number of airfields across Cumbria - while I think that I have them all on the database - many of the military airfields will have had defences build of which some would have been off the main airfield site - where?. The same would be for some of the larger factories producing military hardware. There were inland defences including pillboxes and shelters/bunkers, coastal defences including observation posts and gun positions. The Home Guard provided local defence - what did they build, where were their bases. There were a variety of camps for training plus ranges. Decoy airfields and towns desi gned to lure enemy bombers away from their targets. Barrow is famous for its ship building. What companies were active building military ships in WW1 and WW2. Do any of the slips or other buildings remain? The same goes for any factory which produced materials during the 20th Century. Anti invasion baracades on beaches and concrete blocks that were used to restrict roads.
In addition many civilian buildings were requisitioned for military purposes during WW1 and WW2. Hospitals for injured soldiers, Houses, Hotels, Town Halls for Unit HQ and admin offices, Drill Halls of which some may have been purpose built.
The list goes on!
I would be pleased to hear from anybody who has any recollections or knowledge of any sites that might be of interest. As the project is covering the whole of the UK I would be interested in hearing of locations outside Cumbria as well. However, I am concentrating on Cumbria at present.
If you are aware of any building or structure that has had a military connection I would be pleased to hear from you.
Happy New Year!
