What would you guys say is the next jump in lenses after the 75-300 4.5/5.6 usm? For example i had a little scan and for around £400 you can get a f4 300m L. Is this about the next step or is a IS lense needed? Always need to be looking to the future see Even if the wife dosen't share the same vision Cheers Karl

Hi Karl
Canon don't actually make the 300 f4 anymore so I assume you are talking about buying second hand.Thats the kind of price they are going for.
The next step up from your lense would probably be Sigma 100-300 F4 Sigma 50-500 F5.6
After that you are talking about
Canon 300 F4 L is Canon 400 F5.6 L Canon 100-400 L is
I personally would go for any of the above 3 over the Sigma pair.
The 400 F5.6 is an awesome piece of kit at a good price. The 300 F4 is also a decent lens. The 100-400 is ok but has a few minor niggles. However, take a look around somewhere like RIAT and you will spot about 5 million of them. You also can't fault the versatility of the lens.
p.s Image stabilisation isn't really needed for aircraft photography.Comes in handy for helicopters though.I ain't got it on my 300 2.8 and when the helis come out to play I just stick the camera on a cheap £30 monopod. If you plan on doing a lot more low level stuff it's a no brainer.Go for the 300 F4 l is.
Cheers Gary
